2D Quantum Optoelectronic Technologies

Overview

Wafer-scale Emitter and Detector Arrays for Multi-wavelength Room Temperature Photonic Quantum Technologies

The project focuses on developing single-photon detectors based on 2D materials such as MoS₂, WS₂, WSe₂, and hBN, targeting visible and near-infrared (IR) wavelengths. These materials offer strong optical absorption, tunable electronic properties, and compatibility with nanoscale device architectures, making them promising candidates for room-temperature single-photon detectors (SPDs) for quantum communication and quantum sensing. Their integration into single-photon detection platforms can enable high-performance detectors spanning the visible, near-IR, and potentially telecom wavelength ranges. Engineering lateral heterostructures and optimizing material interfaces can further improve detector performance and enable applications in quantum cryptography, secure communication, and precision sensing. Materials such as MoS₂ and WSe₂ also provide opportunities for integrating spin and polarization control for advanced quantum optical functionalities. The exceptional chemical and thermal stability and insulating properties of hBN further make it an attractive material for robust and scalable quantum photonic devices.
