Material Characterization

SIS Lab

Surface Interface Science lab @IITB

Our research focuses on understanding materials from their surfaces and interfaces, particularly how their atomic and electronic structures determine their properties. We use techniques including STM/STS, photoemission, inverse photoemission, and other surface-sensitive methods.A key aspect of our approach is building the experimental tools needed to address specific scientific questions. We develop our own experimental systems, instrumentation, electronics, control hardware, and software, integrating mechanical systems, feedback, data acquisition, and control. We work across quantum materials, intermetallics, layered and thin-film systems, and surface-adsorbed materials, with the broader goal of connecting fundamental surface and interface physics with new experimental capabilities and, ultimately, device-relevant and quantum technologies.

My research interests focus on quantum materials and device characterization, scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), precision instrumentation and low noise electronics. I am currently developing picoampere-level current measurement electronics (~20 pA) as an NQM deliverable,Femto-Ammeter(TRL 3-4) along with electron-source development for Inverse Photoemission Spectroscopy(IPES). As part of the NQM-supported STM facility, my future research will focus on STM/STS studies of two-dimensional van der Waals materials, in-plane heterostructures, and single-crystal surfaces, investigating their local electronic and surface properties.

I am currently developing a high-resolution, ultra-low current measurement device designed for integration into a custom-built, Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) setup. In parallel, I work with a cluster deposition system to synthesize intermetallic alloys. My research aims to investigate the electronic structures and density of states (DOS) of these alloys at the atomic scale, providing critical insights into their fundamental material properties.

My research focuses on transition metal alloys and functional magnetic materials through thin-film growth and advanced spectroscopic and nanoscale characterization, with the aim of understanding their fundamental electronic and magnetic behavior. My future research interests include studies of surfaces and interfaces using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy (STM/STS), particularly focusing on van der Waals materials, layered and thin-film systems.
